Rev. Joshua Harp organized the United Brethren Chapel in 1879, in the village of Mt. Lena, then known as Smoketown. Mt. Lena was named to honor his wife, Magdalene. The ground was purchase from Henry and Mary Ann Funk for $1.00. People interested in building the church gave labor and supplies.
In 1923, a vestibule and bell tower were added. Later a maple floor and furnace were installed. The interior underwent major renovations in 1950. During Easter worship in 1957, groundbreaking for the educational building, including a kitchen and restrooms, took place. It was dedicated October 25, 1959.
The Evangelical United Brethren and Methodist Churches merged in 1968. We became Mount Lena United Methodist Church. In subsequent years the basement was renovated for Sunday School classrooms. The United Methodist Men constructed our informational signs.
Our prayer garden, picnic pavilion and parking lot were erected on land donated by the Hurley family. These, plus a lighted steeple and stained glass window were provided through memorial gifts. During 1995, our small, country church underwent more changes. Prior to this, we were part of a charge, sharing a pastor with other churches. We then became "station" with a part-time, student pastor.
The Apple Dumplin' Gang was organized in 1995. They meet during the fall months to make delicious, homemade apple dumplings and pies. Through their efforts, thousands of dollars have been donated for church improvements. We are so blessed to have many friends and church members volunteer to improve and maintain our property. A Veteran's Memorial for the Beaver Creek - Mt. Lena Community was dedicated in May 2006 to honor our veterans.
Our church is an outreach for local, national, and international missions.
